World Progress

IT IS ALREADY HAPPENING. PROGRESS IS BEEING MADE. THIS IS NOT A LOOSING BATTLE .

As many know, our world leaders came together in 2000 and made a once in a generation commitment. They committed their nations and their resources to reduce poverty through global partnerships. They committed to the Millennium Development Goals, and progress is being made.

United Nations Millennium Development Goals:

1) Eradicate extreme Poverty and Hunger maternal health

2) Achieve Universal Primary Education

3) Promote gender equality and empower women

4) Reduce Child Mortality

5) Improve maternal health

6) Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

7) Ensure Environmental Sustainability

8) Develop a global partnership for development

Context definition:

According to the 2007 MDGs report released by the United Nations, impressive results have been achieved in Sub-Saharan Africa in areas such as raising agricultural productivity (in Malawi for example), boosting primary school enrollment (as in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and the United Republic of Tanzania), controlling malaria (as in Niger, Togo, Zambia, Zanzibar), widening access to basic rural health services (Zambia), reforesting areas on a large scale (Niger), and increasing access to water and sanitation (Senegal and Uganda).

Also, the percentage of people living on less than $1 a day has reduced (between 1990 and 2004 from 46.8 to 41.1 and so on. Progress has started. We now know this is not a loosing battle.

Progress has started but the magnitude of the work still to be done dwarfs that progress. We cannot blink…we cannot ease our effort, because by the end of tonight another 26,000 children may have died needlessly.

Here are some resources and reports on the progress made:
