Context definition: According to the 2007 MDGs report released by the United Nations, impressive results have been achieved in Sub-Saharan Africa in areas such as raising agricultural productivity (in Malawi for example), boosting primary school enrollment (as in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and the United Republic of Tanzania), controlling malaria (as in Niger, Togo, Zambia, Zanzibar), widening access to basic rural health services (Zambia), reforesting areas on a large scale (Niger), and increasing access to water and sanitation (Senegal and Uganda). Also, the percentage of people living on less than $1 a day has reduced (between 1990 and 2004 from 46.8 to 41.1 and so on. Progress has started. We now know this is not a loosing battle. Progress has started but the magnitude of the work still to be done dwarfs that progress. We cannot blink…we cannot ease our effort, because by the end of tonight another 26,000 children may have died needlessly. |
